More brutality and less drive: QuakeCon 2024 attendees share their impressions of DOOM: The Dark Age private screening

Visitors of the QuakeCon 2024 festival got the opportunity to attend a private screening of the shooter DOOM: The Dark Ages, which was announced in early summer with a colourful trailer.

The shooting was forbidden, so DOOM fans shared their impressions on the thematic forum of the game.

Here's What We Know

Almost unanimously gamers note that the new part of the cult franchise turns out to be gloomy, brutal and much slower than DOOM Eternal. They confirm the developers' words that in the new game the Doom Slayer is not as agile and mobile as in the last two games - he relies more on strong armour and covers himself from enemies' shots with a shield. But this shield has a second meaning: it is equipped with a chain drive and can be used to saw demons.

The shield appeared not only in the main character, but also in his opponents, who actively build defence, and when attacking their shields flash yellow, which allows the player to quickly react to the attacks.

Among the interesting gamers note the appearance of several new enemies, including a certain spider-like boss, which resembles its "colleagues" from Dark Souls. And some types of demons became much larger.

In DOOM: The Dark Ages there will be much less coloured markings, for example, when an enemy can be killed - his body is no longer highlighted in red, instead a halo appears above his head.

As shown in the debut trailer, in some missions Executioner of Doom uses a huge combat robot (mech) to massacre particularly large enemies and crowds of their smaller helpers. One of such levels reminded gamers of "Mars" - apparently, it implies the red planet of DOOM (2016) sample.

The protagonist received a number of new melee techniques, he has a weapon that regenerates shells, a double-barreled plasma rifle, a single-barreled shotgun and a spiked chain appeared.

When We Can Expect It

Doom: The Dark Ages is expected to release in 2025 on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), PS5, Xbox Series, and will be available immediately on Game Pass.
