Samsung has announced a significant investment in the South Korean company Rainbow Robotics and increased its stake in it to 35%.

Here's What We Know

This decision continues the cooperation between the companies that began in 2023 and aims to strengthen Samsung's robotics base to create more advanced humanoid robots.

According to a press release, Samsung has invested about KRW 267 billion (approximately USD 181 million), becoming the largest shareholder in Rainbow Robotics. This will allow Samsung to combine its achievements in artificial intelligence with Rainbow Robotics' technical achievements in robotics.

Rainbow Robotics, founded in 2011 by researchers from the KAIST Centre for Humanoid Robotics Research, developed the country's first bipedal humanoid robot, Hubo. The company specialises in the production of humanoid and industrial robots.

To maximise the effect of the cooperation, Samsung will set up a synergy council with Rainbow Robotics to focus on developing new robotic technologies and adapting them to market requirements. In addition, Samsung is opening the Office of Robotics of the Future, which will report to the company's CEO. Dr Jun-Ho Oh, the founder of Rainbow Robotics, will head this office as an advisor to Samsung after his retirement.

Samsung actively presents its new achievements in robotics. For example, at CES 2023 and 2024, the company showed the Bot Fit robot assistant and the Ballie robot prototype, which helps with household chores. The company plans to commercialise a variety of robotic products in the future.
