Warnings about the use of AI
In today's world, artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of many industries, including the media industry. The gg editorial team believes that transparency in the use of AI is key to maintaining the trust of our readers. We also encourage more media outlets to publish the same information to increase transparency with their readers.
Why we are publishing this warning
The gg editorial team is convinced that artificial intelligence is set to become a powerful tool in the media industry and change their work forever, just as it was changed by personal computers and then the Internet. With the advent of computers, they didn't write texts for us, but they provided a new level of opportunities. The advent of the Internet has further changed the possibilities for searching, analysing information and efficiency in the work of the media. However, the editorial policy did not lead to responsible media outlets massively publishing materials from the Internet as their own. It has only led to the fact that they have started to provide links to sources of information, which should only increase the trust of readers, as any information has become easier to verify.
Similarly, gagadget's editorial team sees AI as an opportunity to free professionals from routine tasks, allowing them to spend more time on things that require human creativity, intuition, and intelligence. It is a next-level tool that allows us to do our work more efficiently, while maintaining its quality and our own author's style of publication.
However, our team also understands that uncontrolled use of AI can have negative consequences. There is a risk that readers will lose trust in media outlets that outsource the entire creative process and writing to algorithms, minimising human control and not informing site visitors about it.
This approach is already torpedoing the reputation of the media and questioning readers' trust in news and other publications. We are already seeing this on social media around the world. With this in mind, we are proactive and publicly declare how we use AI in our work. Our priority is the trust of our readers and transparency in communicating with them.
Our principles of using AI
The gg editorial team has outlined the key principles that will shape our use of this technology now and in the future. These principles ensure that AI will become our reliable assistant, not a replacement for human skill.
AI is a tool for progress.
We are convinced that artificial intelligence can serve the industry. Our editorial team strives to find new ways to integrate it to provide readers with high-quality results of their work, focusing on their own expertise and experience. And we plan to outsource those processes that can be automated without losing quality of work to AI where appropriate. This primarily concerns unskilled routine work.
AI plays only a supporting role.
Any technology (such as computers or the Internet) should support, not replace, humans. Our authors believe that all tasks in the field of media content should be performed under the guidance of live people. Editors, not algorithms, always have the final say.
The integration of AI into media is gradual and controlled.
Our editorial team approaches the integration of AI cautiously, gradually and consciously, assessing its real impact on the quality of work. We don't use AI for the sake of trend or hype, but only where it can really improve the media's performance.
Transparency in the use of AI
Our main principle is that whenever gg uses AI, our readers should know about it. We always mark how and where we use AI tools.
How we use AI
In line with our principles, we transparently describe how gagadget integrates artificial intelligence into our daily work.
Photography
We take and edit photos in-house, but we use graphic editors, which all now have AI tools for image processing. For example, AI can help reduce grain in photos, calibrate colour gradations, or improve image resolution.
Illustrations
We generally use photos or illustrations from primary sources in our news stories. In our own editorial materials, we also use only photos, screenshots or collages created by ourselves. Because they are an integral part of storytelling and represent our understanding and expertise on how to visualise stories about new and complex technologies. But gg 's editorial team can also use generative artificial intelligence to create illustrative collages or covers for its publications. Which will be labelled accordingly.
Video production
Videos are shot and edited by the gg editorial team manually, without automation. AI is used only for voice over to improve post-production editing. However, any editing using AI is checked for compliance with our standards, and viewers are always notified of its use.
Texts for social media
Texts for social media are written exclusively by our authors. We can only use AI to automatically schedule posts to determine the best time to publish them. In case of changes in the processes of creating content for social media, we will gradually test the impact of AI on the results. All texts created with the use of AI are reviewed by our editors before publication.
We are always open to dialogue with readers or the media community. If you would like to discuss any element of this text and our AI principles with the gg team, please contact us. Our email address is editors@gagadget.com.
