The Government of Canada has launched the IFM procurement process and has already issued a request for information to define preliminary requirements and explore options for the acquisition of new artillery systems.

Here's What We Know

The Canadian Armed Forces plan to purchase 80 to 98 self-propelled 155 mm howitzers to replace 33 towed M777 howitzers. At the same time, 121 towed 105 mm howitzers of the C3 and LG1 Mk II models will remain in reserve.

In addition to howitzers, the programme also includes the purchase of up to 99 120-mm mortars to be integrated with LAV 6.0 ACSV wheeled armoured vehicles and up to 85 81-mm mortars mounted on an unspecified light tactical vehicle.

Alternatively, the Canadian government is considering focusing exclusively on 81mm mortars, which could lead to the procurement of up to 133 units, instead of the 218 older L16 mortars currently in service.

The programme also includes the procurement of support vehicles, including ammunition, command vehicles and reconnaissance platforms, which can be purchased separately.

In addition to artillery systems, the procurement will include fire control systems, communications equipment, simulators, training, ammunition certification and logistics. It is also planned to upgrade the infrastructure to accommodate the new systems, which will enhance the firepower of the Canadian Army.
