Why is everyone suddenly going back to dumbphones? Am I missing something?

Seriously confused by this trend. Three friends in my circle switched from iPhones back to basic phones in the last month alone. Acting like they discovered some life-changing secret.

One friend literally bragged about how "liberating" it feels not having social media constantly available. Cool, but like... just delete the apps? Another one keeps showing off his "incredible" battery life like it's 2005 all over again.

Is this just another hipster phase like vinyl records and film cameras? Or am I missing some legitimate benefit here? Feel like I'm taking crazy pills seeing people voluntarily giving up maps, music, cameras, and instant messaging all in one device.

Anyone else notice this trend or know people who've made the switch? Genuinely curious what's driving this beyond just digital detox buzzwords.

Switched 3 months ago and sleep quality improved immediately. Turns out scrolling tiktok until 2am was the problem, not screen time itself πŸ’€

It's the cognitive load difference

Smartphone = infinite possibilities always competing for attention

Basic phone = just calls and texts

Brain actually gets to rest

People fleeing constant surveillance. Smartphones track EVERYTHING - location, app usage, purchases, health data. Corporations have more data points on you than your own mother

We've become slaves to dopamine hits. Smartphones are specifically engineered for addiction. Breaking free = hardest but most rewarding choice I've made

companies definitely worried - smartphone addiction study showed 58% of participants demonstrated significant withdrawal symptoms similar to substance dependency when separated from devices

Just another performative trend for people to feel superior about. Same energy as announcing you don't own a tv or don't eat gluten

Keep both. Smartphone weekdays for work, dumbphone weekends for sanity. Balance > extremes

Modern solution: Light Phone. Minimalist smartphone with essential functions but no addictive apps/social media. Best of both worlds

Tried dumbphone experiment until I got lost in unfamiliar city without maps. Some smartphone features genuinely improve safety

Most basic phones have maps now! Just no app store or social media. Not like we're going back to 1990s tech

watch how many "digital detoxers" quietly switch back in 3 months when the novelty wears off and inconvenience sets in
