Sony Bravia owners - what's the best soundbar for sony bravia tv that doesn't break the bank?

Just upgraded to a 65" Bravia after my 10-year-old Samsung finally died, and WOW the picture quality! But... the sound is so thin it's like listening through a tin can.

Tried cranking volume but dialogue still muffled while explosions blow out my eardrums. Living in apartment so full surround system means angry neighbors. Need something that actually works seamlessly with Bravia and makes dialogue clearer without maxing volume.

Don't want something requiring 37 cables and PhD to install either. Budget is tight after splurging on the TV itself, and whatever I get needs girlfriend approval on aesthetics. Our living room is ~15×18 ft with open concept to kitchen. Mostly watching movies, some gaming, and sports on weekends. Any real-world recommendations from actual owners?

Bravia's built-in acoustic surface garbage marketing got me too. Returned my first soundbar because bravia remote wouldn't control it. Check compatibility FIRST

my 4 stages of soundbar grief:

  1. buy cheap $80 one
  2. realize it sounds worse than tv
  3. return and buy midrange ($300)
  4. wonder why i didn't just start here

Apartment dweller tip: measure your tv stand BEFORE purchasing. Got stuck with soundbar wider than my console table and it looks ridiculous hanging off edges

completely eliminated my "what did they say??" moments during movies with the sony ht-G700 system. vertical surround engine actually creates decent height illusion without ceiling speakers

Soundbars exist for a reason - not everyone wants their living room looking like mission control with speakers and wires everywhere. Peace at home worth the convenience tax

counterpoint - spent 30 min hiding cables and saved $200+ versus comparable soundbar. Worth the effort

These smart tvs getting dumber i swear. Spent 3 hours trying to get my tv to recognize soundbar via hdmi-arc. Finally worked after 7 youtube tutorials and factory reset 😭

✨ TV AUDIO SECRET THEY DON'T TELL YOU ✨

Most soundbars only process stereo/5.1 - your fancy tv downmixes atmos content before it even reaches soundbar. Check if yours passes through unprocessed signal or whole setup worthless

Sony products designed to recognize each other but still took 45 mins to pair properly. Technology was supposed to make life easier but i'm aging in reverse trying to sync these things

Watching football through Bose Solo 5 Soundbar and genuinely shocked how much better crowd noise sounds. Feels like being at game now instead of listening through phone speaker

Rich audiophile friends sneer at my soundbar setup until they actually watch movie at my place. Suddenly they quiet when dialogue perfectly clear without remotes involved

Most tv audio problems stem from poor acoustic impedance matching between digital signal processing and speaker driver capabilities. Soundbars solve this with dedicated amp channels

went through 4 different brands before finding one that actually worked right. each had some stupid problem the reviews never mentioned. stores probably have me blacklisted for returns at this point

Calibrate whatever you get!!!! Literally EVERY soundbar sounds like trash with default settings. Spend 20 mins tweaking eq based on room acoustics

Learned hard way: always buy audio gear somewhere with good return policy. What sounds amazing in showroom often disappoints at home. Costco saved me from being stuck with $400 mistake

Spent $800 on soundbar everyone raved about and my wife still uses subtitles for everything. Apparently I "wasted money on bass" when dialogue clarity was the actual problem. Anyone else's spouse completely unimpressed by your expensive audio upgrades or just me experiencing this special marriage dynamic?

PSA from someone who actually mixes audio professionally - your room acoustics matter 10x more than soundbar brand. Hardwood floors + empty walls = terrible sound no matter what equipment. Add some rugs, wall art, bookshelves. Basically anything that absorbs/diffuses sound. You're welcome for the free $5k consultation

weird question maybe but does anyone else's soundbar become the center of weird family negotiations? Like "you can watch YOUR show with the soundbar on after I finish MY show with regular TV speakers" situations? Technology creating new forms of domestic disputes we never anticipated lmao

Bravia-specific feature worth knowing: Sony HT-A series bars support Acoustic Center Sync - the TV's own speakers become the center channel while the soundbar handles left/right and bass. Dialogue literally comes from the screen, not the bar on the shelf below it. Only works with Bravia XR, but OP has a Bravia so this is directly relevant

arm123's random power cycling has a fix. It's CEC conflict - the TV and soundbar keep sending each other standby signals. On Bravia: Settings → Watching TV → External Inputs → BRAVIA Sync → Auto Device Off → turn it off. Took me three weeks of assuming the soundbar was defective before i found this

rss bought $800 worth of bass for a dialogue clarity problem. The whole thread the answer was a dedicated center channel. The subwoofer was genuinely not the variable. This is how audio forums create victims
