ASUS Googlebook design revealed: Glowbar lid, Gemini key, and a $1,390 price tag
ASUS's entry into Google's new Googlebook laptop lineup has leaked in full, and it looks sharply distinct from anything running Windows or macOS. Eight exclusive renders published by The Mac Observer show the ASUS Googlebook CX9406 in detail — a dark-grey machine with thin display bezels, a glowing lid strip, and a keyboard reworked around Google's Gemini AI. Pre-orders are confirmed to open September 21, 2026, though pricing remains a leaked figure rather than an official one.
The look
The most eye-catching exterior detail is the Glowbar — a narrow, multicolor strip running across the lid above the ASUS logo. Google has already flagged the Glowbar as a signature visual across the Googlebook range; it doubles as a battery and charging status indicator. The chassis itself is dark grey with slim side bezels and a small camera bump at the top of the screen.
Open it up, and the workspace is built around a large rectangular trackpad, a full keyboard without a numpad, and speaker grilles on either side. The left palm rest carries a "Googlebook" label. Most telling is the dedicated Google key sitting to the left of Alt — across the entire Googlebook lineup, that key is the fast-launch trigger for Gemini AI and system functions.
A full-size USB-A port is visible on the right edge. Internal render views reveal an active cooling setup: a fan tucked under the right side of the keyboard and a heat pipe running toward the center of the board — signs ASUS is planning for sustained performance rather than passive cooling.
The screen shown in renders displays a blue desktop with a centered taskbar carrying icons for YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Play. That reflects what Googlebook actually is: a new category announced by Google in May 2026 that blends Android and ChromeOS, with Gemini AI tools (including Magic Pointer and Create My Widget) and deep integration with Android phones — letting users run mobile apps and browse phone files directly from the laptop.
Price and availability
A retail listing leak puts the CX9406 at around $1,390 for a Core Ultra 5 / 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD configuration, per Android Authority. Higher-spec options with Core Ultra 7 and up to 64 GB RAM are rumored. That price point puts it squarely against the MacBook Air (from $1,099) and Microsoft's Copilot Plus PCs. No UK pricing or GBP equivalent has been announced, and no retail partners — US or UK — are confirmed yet.
Final specs including CPU model, display size and resolution, battery capacity, and official pricing have not been disclosed. More details are expected around the September 21 pre-order opening.
