The Last of Us showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have confirmed that HBO is bringing back spores as a way to spread the infection in the second season. This decision adds new plot possibilities and brings back an element of the game that was absent in the first season.

Here's What We Know

The new trailer, unveiled at SXSW 2025, shows an infected person exhaling spores, a key element from the video game that forces characters to wear masks in infected areas. In the first season, the spores were replaced with fragile tendrils that looked cinematic and created a more terrifying atmosphere. However, in the second season, the spores are back, which will have a significant impact on the plot and character interactions.

Druckmann explained that the decision to bring back the spores was dictated by the dramatic needs of the story:
"We wanted to find the right moment to introduce disputes so that it would make a difference to the story. And now that moment has come."

The second season also promises more action and more infected. The trailer shows the city of Jackson being attacked by a horde of infected people, creating tension and threat to the community. Mazin noted that the role of the infected will be significantly expanded: "We want to make their presence meaningful, not just increase their numbers."

The second season of The Last of Us will cover only a part of the plot of the second game, leaving room for a potential third season. A total of seven episodes are planned, and the first one will be released on 13 April.
