Following the success of HBO's first season, The Last of Us is gearing up for its second season, which will launch on 13 April 2025. The new trailer promises the return of spores, which are an important part of the game's lore.

Here's What We Know

The first season of The Last of Us became a real hit, gaining recognition from critics and viewers, but some changes caused a mixed reaction. In particular, in the series, the infection spread through fragile antennae, rather than spores, as in the game. However, the new trailer confirms a return to the game's spore-based approach.

The trailer shows an infected character exhaling spores into the air, which can change the characters' survival behaviour. Just like in the game, they may be forced to wear masks in enclosed spaces.

As a reminder, the series' co-creator Craig Mazin explained the creative changes in 2023, saying: "In the world we're creating, if we released the spores into the air, it would make perfect sense that they would spread everywhere and everyone would have to wear a mask at all times, and probably everyone would be fully infected by then."

So now I wonder how these changes will be explained in the series. It is likely that in the TV version, the fungus has progressed over 20+ years and can now infect through spores.
