The Swedish government has announced a nineteenth military aid package worth 16 billion kroner ($1.6bn) to Ukraine - it will be the largest support from the Scandinavian country since Russia invaded in 2022.

Here's What We Know

The package is divided into three parts:

  1. Sweden will use $900 million to buy arms and equipment to be delivered to Ukraine. The purchases will be made mainly from the Swedish and European defence industry.
  2. $500m will be used to finance orders from Ukraine's military industry (this is commonly referred to as the "Danish model").
  3. Sweden will allocate $100m worth of weapons from its own stockpiles, including machine guns, ammunition, ambulances and much more.

In total, military support from Sweden this year will amount to almost $3bn.

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson said that his country will continue to support Ukraine and seek to ensure it has the strongest possible position in potential negotiations. Sweden believes that it is critical for Europe to build up its own defence capabilities and will do its utmost.
