Galaxy Ring will be able to charge from a smartphone - Samsung patents new technology
Samsung may offer Galaxy Ring users a new charging method.
Here's What We Know
According to a recent Samsung patent application published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the company is considering charging the Galaxy Ring through a special slot on the back of the Galaxy smartphone.
In addition, during such charging, the smart ring will be able to transmit health and physical activity data to the phone.
The patent does not specify whether this slot will be built directly into the smartphone or will be part of a special case. However, the diagrams presented describe both rigid and flexible smartphone designs or cases that can directly charge the Galaxy Ring.
Currently, the Galaxy Ring can only be charged using a special charging case that connects via USB-C or wireless charging. Alternatively, the charging case can be placed on the back of a Wireless PowerShare-enabled Galaxy smartphone for power.
If the technology proposed in the patent becomes a reality, the Galaxy Ring will be able to charge directly from the smartphone or case, eliminating the need for a charging case. At the same time, the implementation of this method may have certain difficulties: the charging slot will make the smartphone thicker or force the company to change the location of internal components. It may also increase the cost of smartphones, which will not appeal to users who do not plan to buy a Galaxy Ring.
