In a recent interview with Gaming Interviews, Marathon game director Joe Ziegler said that Bungie does not intend to directly compete with other extraction shooters such as Escape from Tarkov. Instead, the studio aims to create a unique experience that can coexist with existing projects.

Here's What We Know

"Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think of creating a game as a direct competition with others. For me, it's important to offer something interesting and cool that can exist alongside other projects and be no less significant," Ziegler said.

Bungie focuses on creating a game that generates engaging stories for players. The development team wants players to have interesting stories to share with others after their Marathon session.

However, for now, Marathon will not have a proximity chat, which allows for close-distance communication, due to concerns about toxicity

Marathon is scheduled for release on 23 September 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game will support crossplay and cross-play, and will offer alpha testing, which will begin on 23 April. Also, according to rumours, the beta test of the Marathon shooter may begin in May or June.
