The South Korean company Hanwha Aerospace has officially confirmed its intention to create a new aircraft engine that will replace the US F-414 with the KF-21 and become the basis for a sixth-generation fighter jet.

Here's What We Know

In a new promotional video, Hanwha Aerospace presented the concept of a promising sixth-generation fighter aircraft, which is scheduled for development in the 2030s. This aircraft is to be a continuation of the Korean aviation programme after the introduction of the updated KF-21 Block 3. The latter, in addition to the new engine, will have improved stealth characteristics on par with the F-35, as well as the function of controlling fighter drones.

The KF-21's re-engineering and transition to its own engine is a strategic decision that will allow South Korea to reduce its dependence on the United States and simplify the export of the combat aircraft. This is especially true given the possible restrictions on the re-export of weapons that use US technology.

Hanwha notes that independent development of the engine could take at least 10 years, but in the case of international cooperation, the timeframe could be reduced - although this would call into question the export rights to the product.

The KF-21 Block 3 is already positioned as a competitor in the market for advanced multi-role fighters. Seoul is actively promoting it among Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The latter have shown interest due to the failure to purchase the F-35. At the same time, Saudi Arabia is considering the Turkish KAAN project as an alternative. Thus, the Korean KF-21 Block 3 may become part of the global redistribution of the combat aircraft market.

In terms of timing, the KF-21 Block 3 was originally expected to be launched by 2027, but given the complexity of engine development, the deadline is likely to be revised. And the sixth-generation fighter, according to Korea Aerospace Industries' plans, may appear in the period 2031-2045.
