Does the new generation of consoles really bring revolutionary changes? Akyo Sakamoto, Chief Technology Officer at Kojima Productions, believes that the transition from PS4 to PS5 is "not that big", but it has certainly made achieving the design goals in Death Stranding 2 "more efficient".

Here's What We Know

When asked about what the team could achieve on PS5 that wasn't possible on PS4 as a leading platform, Sakamoto admitted that it's not as big a leap as going from PS1 to PS2, but the new hardware system certainly makes development easier.

"The most obvious improvement from a technological standpoint is the shorter load times, but to be honest, the difference between the two hardware systems isn't that big," he says. "It's more a case of there being more efficient ways to achieve similar goals on the PS5.

But Akio says this freedom has had side effects and technical challenges for programmers. In some respects, it has created an environment where artists are now out of control.

As recently as last year, former PlayStation executive Sean Layden said that "you're not going to see a performance leap from PS1 to PS2 anymore" and, in fact, we're probably approaching "the point where the console becomes irrelevant".

"We're at a point where the hardware innovation curve is starting to flatten out or peak," Leyden said at the time. "When you open up an Xbox or a PlayStation, it's actually pretty much the same chipset. It's all created by AMD. Each company has its own OS and patented secret sauce, but it's essentially the same thing. I think we're pretty close to the final specification of what a console can be."

And we will be able to find out the difference between Death Stranding 1 and Death Stranding 2 on 26 June exclusively on PlayStation 5.
