Toyota has already produced a 300bhp three-cylinder engine, and now promises to create an even more impressive four-cylinder motor. This 2.0-litre unit is already being tested by the Gazoo Racing division.

Here's What We Know

German resource Auto Motor und Sport has learned from Toyota engineers that the new G20E engine has much more potential than the claimed 400-450 horsepower in the Toyota GR Yaris M concept car. They stated that with a larger turbocharger, more than 600 hp can easily be achieved. This is twice the output of the 1.6-litre G16E-GTS turbo engine in the GR Yaris, GR Corolla and Lexus LBX Morizo RR.

Toyota's new two-litre motor can be mounted either longitudinally or transversely. It can stand at the front or rear - a versatile solution for future Gazoo Racing sports cars. Toyota has hinted at a possible return of the Celica and/or MR2, and has also promised that the Supra will live on beyond the current generation. The next-generation GR86 could also be a natural candidate.

Toyota told Auto Motor und Sport that it has been testing the G20E in the GR Yaris M for some time now, but as recently as last year Toyota published a video of a Lexus IS equipped with one of the new next-generation motors. At the time, the head of Toyota's engine division, Takashi Uehara, praised the "all-new engine" as being aimed at "car enthusiasts who expect something special".
