Denmark launches first domestic flight on an electric aircraft
Sønderborg Airport is the first in Denmark to launch a scheduled domestic flight with an all-electric aircraft. On 11 July, the all-electric aircraft successfully completed the route to Copenhagen.
Here's What We Know
The flight was performed by ALIA CTOL, an electric aircraft developed by US-based Beta Technologies. Its maximum range when fully loaded is up to 622 kilometres, which more than covers the 200 km distance between the two Danish cities.
The flight is part of the Sønnerborg municipality's efforts as part of the ProjectZero climate initiative, which started back in 2007. Since then, CO₂ emissions in the region have been reduced by 69 per cent, and the municipality plans to achieve full climate neutrality by 2029. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has already named Sønnerborg the "Energy Efficiency Capital of the World" for its impressive decarbonisation rates.
Since the beginning, the project has been actively supported by local technology company Danfoss, which specialises in energy-efficient solutions for heating, cooling and electricity. The company sees great potential in the development of electric aviation.
The ALIA aircraft used for the demonstration flight is available in both conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) versions. It is designed for short and regional routes and, according to the manufacturer, can cover distances of up to 622 kilometres on a single charge.
