Musk made Grok 2.5 open source: now anyone can download and improve AI
Ilon Musk once again surprises the tech world. In a post on X, he announced that xAI is opening up the source code for an older version of its Grok 2.5 artificial intelligence. According to Musk, the new Grok 3 version will also become available to the general public in about six months.
Here's What We Know
Anyone can now download Grok 2.5 from the Hugging Face platform, run the model, and even modify it to suit their needs. However, there are limitations: the xAI licence prohibits using Grok for training or creating other AI models.
The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source.

This isn't xAI's first step towards open source. In March 2024, the company already published a basic version of Grok-1, which was not customised. Unlike OpenAI, which provides researchers and businesses with only limited ChatGPT models, xAI is making its developments as accessible as possible.
Opening up the source code can give independent developers the opportunity to improve the model. In this way, xAI continues to show contrast with other major AI players and opens up new opportunities for independent developers to experiment with artificial intelligence.
