Sweden unveils world's first green steel batch
The Hybrit project, a combined effort of three Swedish companies - SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall - has announced another success: the first delivery of steel produced without the use of coal. The first trial shipment has been purchased by Volvo AB, which will use the eco-friendly steel to build prototypes of new cars. If the experiment proves successful, full-scale mass production of eco steel will start in 2026.
The traditional steel industry, which uses coke, emits huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year, accounting for 8% of global emissions. But the Hybrit project recently began producing clean steel that uses no coking coal and no harmful emissions. They have been replaced by hydrogen and electricity produced exclusively from renewable sources - i.e. using so-called "green hydrogen".
Green Hydrogen, in turn, is a key element in the EU's plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
"The world's first green steel is not only a breakthrough for SSAB, but also proof of the steel industry's ability to transition and significantly reduce its global carbon footprint. We hope that this step will inspire everyone who wants to make the transition to cleaner production faster," says Martin Lindqvist, President of SSAB.
