Google has lowered the commission on in-app subscriptions to 15%

Google has made an important announcement to developers about reducing the commission for recurring subscriptions to 15% or less, for all apps. 

However, there are some caveats and conditions worth taking a closer look at:

  • If your app offers subscriptions (like Spotify) through the Play Store payment system, you'll have to pay a 15% commission to Google. In March, the company lowered the commission from 30% to 15% on the first million dollars earned for any developer, now the amount of earnings doesn't matter.
  • If your app offers media distribution such as video, audio or books, the subscription fee will be 10%. Of course, to get this opportunity, you must be eligible for the Play Media Experience program, which spells out conditions such as 100,000 monthly active installations on Google Play.
  • There's no change to the in-app purchase fees either, which remain at 30%. So if you're a developer of games that sell additional items, the new scheme won't do you any good.

Google reported that only 3% of developers on the Play Store offer in-app merchandise or paid apps. The company claims that 99% of these developers will be eligible for a commission of 15% or less.
