First sign: Eero will implement Matter support in all of its current WiFi routers
Amazon-owned Eero will soon expand support for its MESH WiFi smart home systems to more universal standards. CEO Nick Weaver said that all Eero's Thread-enabled routers will receive an upgrade to the Matter smart home standard, which gg Implementation of a single Matter standard for smart home devices has been postponed until 2022.
Weaver also hinted that Eero is considering backup routers, although he did not officially confirm those plans. He's not worried about the growth of 5G home internet, noting that US residents (which is the market the industry pioneer's MESH systems are aimed at) are mostly moving to gigabit (wired) internet "in droves."
Amazon is also upgrading most Echo speakers to support Matter. Amazon-owned Eero is practically expected to follow, and Ring has begun embedding Eero routers in its signaling systems. Such transition to the single "smart home" standard on the part of major corporations can only be welcomed, as a zoo of protocols and incompatibilities is already boring users all over the world.
Recall that the Zigbee Alliance was renamed to Connectivity Standards Alliance (Connectivity Standards Alliance) for the sake of Matter standard implementation. Although other organizations have made similar attempts, CSA had some big-name supporters like Amazon, Apple, Google, IKEA, Signify, SmartThings, and Comcast at the start. Later Lutron, Somfy, NXP and ASSA ABLOY and many others joined the project.
