Samsung and LG will fix a long-standing problem with OLED displays

South Korean companies LG and Samsung are planning to solve one of the ancient problems of organic LED screens.

What is known

We are talking about pixel burnout. This problem has been plaguing OLED panels for years, regardless of the price category, although in the more expensive solutions, it may occur less frequently. Burnout occurs in areas where the same elements are constantly displayed. For example, in the case of smartphones it may be a status bar or virtual keys. It manifests itself in the form of a residual image.

Samsung and LG - the world's leading manufacturers of panels on organic LED. They are engaged in the development of Two-Stack Tandem technology, which doubles the thickness and brightness of the screen by using two layers of red, green and blue pixels.

In addition, both companies have created algorithms that will prevent burn-in, but no details about it yet. But we do know that Samsung Display launched a project QD-QLED. It will produce displays that do not use RGB elements, as usual OLED solutions, and exclusively blue LEDs to control brightness. And yes, QD-OLED is OLED on quantum dots.

When we will see the results of the two companies has not yet been specified. Perhaps the new panel will appear already in the Samsung Galaxy S22. As for LG, its screens, made with the technology Two-Stack Tandem, will be used in multimedia systems in cars.
