Xiaomi has filed a patent for the technology of scanning a fingerprint in any part of the display
Smartphones with in-display fingerprint scanners appeared back in 2018, but the mainstream technology became a year later. Xiaomi wants to give a new impetus to the development of technology.
What is known
The manufacturer has patented the technology for scanning a fingerprint anywhere on the screen. In some cases, modern fingerprint sensors are large - almost half the display. But most of the sensors are compact solutions with a diameter of no more than 1 cm, installed in the lower center of the screen.
According to the Chinese patent office, the development of Xiaomi will allow you to quickly unlock your smartphone without having to put your finger on a certain point on the display. The technology uses a network of built-in infrared LED-elements, which are located between the sensor layer and the organic light-emitting diode panel.
The touch layer registers the touch of a finger to any point of the display, determines its shape and location. Then the LED elements emit IR light in one area or another, while they are not used in other parts of the display.
After the light is reflected by the pad of your finger, it is projected onto the receivers. Based on the information received, the smartphone generates a fingerprint card and compares the result with previously saved samples. If they match, the device will be unlocked.
Note that the registration of a patent does not mean that the technology will ever be used. For example, Huawei received a similar patent a year and a half ago, but it never came to commercial use. Perhaps the reason for this is the sanctions from the United States.
