OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the greatest danger of artificial intelligence applications is not killer robots, but "subtle societal distortions" that could lead AI systems into chaos.
Here's What We Know
Speaking at the Dubai summit, Altman called for the creation of an international body to regulate the AI field. He said the industry is still in an active debate about the way forward, but needs to move towards a concrete action plan in the coming years.
Altman noted that current AI technologies like ChatGPT are in their infancy. However, in just a few years, progress will be significant.
The OpenAI CEO also welcomed the change in attitudes towards AI in education, from fear of using it for cheating to realising the importance of these technologies.
However, the discussion did not touch on the localised risks of using AI, particularly in the UAE. These include restrictions on freedom of speech and the activities of a local company, G42, suspected of espionage and links to China, which jeopardises the quality of training data for AI systems.
