Apple smartphones could get an under-screen front camera in 2026, but it's not certain

Several companies including Samsung and ZTE have smartphones in their portfolios that feature under-screen front-facing cameras. Apple is far from such a solution for now, but that could change in a few years.

Here's What We Know

LG Innotek has created a technology called Freeform Optic Lens. It will solve a key problem with sub-screen selfie cameras, which is the difficulty in capturing light and leads to a drop in photo quality.

LG Innotek is working with LG Display to realise the technology, the patent application for which was filed two years ago. One of the South Korean companies' potential customers is Apple.

Now LG Innotek and LG Display are working on improving light transmission. The work will also take place in 2024. During this period, Apple will try to move the Face ID sensors under the screen. But the front camera will be located under the iPhone display not earlier than 2026.
