The remake of The Last of Us will receive improved artificial intelligence, smooth animations and more

Naughty Dog released a ten-minute video, which is dedicated to the story of the rebuilding of the remake based on the PlayStation 5. In addition to the interview, the video contains a large number of gameplay footage.

According to the words of Neil Druckman, the idea to refresh the first part came to the team while working on flashbacks in the second part. In this way, the studio could match the original vision of the first The Last of Us. The technical capabilities of PS3 imposed certain limitations, and PS 5 in this regard gives more freedom. 4K resolution, HDR, improved tactile response, 60 fps - all this helped reinvent the game.

We collected the main points from the video:

  • The characters have become not only more detailed, but also more alive. Thanks to the additional facial animation, we can see even the smallest changes in the facial expressions of the characters.
  • Maintains the same quality level of character models in cutscenes and during gameplay.
  • The power of the PlayStation 5 will allow you to increase the number of objects in the frame and prescribe the appropriate physics for them. In the past, developers could only dream of having so many particles and items. Glass shatters into small pieces, and concrete crumbles from bullets.
  • The artificial intelligence in the game has been significantly improved. Heavy systems were screwed into it to make enemies and allies behave more meaningfully. The way enemies communicate with each other, chase heroes, and flank should add to the intensity of battles.
  • Another innovation was motion matching technology, which tries to predict the direction of movement and make movement animation smoother.
  • The team has not forgotten the wishes of the players and added several additional modes, including a race with only one life and an option for speedrunners with a timer.
  • More unlockable customization items will appear. For example, a whole wardrobe of new clothes for Ellie and Joel.
  • The remake will offer a large set of accessibility settings, including audio commentary for the visually impaired.
  • The structure of the levels remained unchanged, but their design was refreshed, adding more realism.
  • The Last of Us uses all the features of the PS5, such as 3D audio, fast loading times and tactile feedback. The latter applies to weapons (the trigger resists being pressed, the tension of the bowstring feels under the fingers), moving around the world, fights and more peaceful moments, such as when Joel strokes the giraffe.

The Last of Us Part I will be released on September 2 on PS5 and later on PC.
