Hey guys, Thinking about switching to Mikrotik for my home network. Heard good things, but kinda lost in all the options. I've got about 100Mbps internet and maybe 10-15 devices. Nothing too crazy, just want something reliable that I can tinker with a bit. Any recs?

If you want something beefier, look at the RB4011. It's the best Mikrotik router for home use if you ask me. Bit pricey though.

Hope you like reading manuals lol. Nah but for real, they're solid. Check out the hEX. Does the job for most homes.

You sure about Mikrotik for home use? Unless you're into networking, might be overkill. Why not stick with something simpler?

Yo s_area, don't forget about Wi-Fi. Most Mikrotiks are just routers. You'll need access points if you want wireless.

Or get the hap ac2. Best mikrotik wifi router I've used. All-in-one solution, decent coverage.

We're scaring the newbie lol. s_area, Mikrotik's great once you get the hang of it. Start with the hEX, plenty of tutorials online.

Lol, every time I see "Mikrotik" I read it as "Mikrokit". Like some tiny Lego set for building routers. "Now with 50% more blinking lights!"

Stumbled on this article the other day, "Ubiquiti vs. MikroTik — Which one is better for a home network?" on 1gbits.com. Pretty eye-opening stuff. Might wanna give it a read before you pull the trigger on anything. Just search the title on Google, it'll pop right up.

Before you put it on your actual connection: the default config leaves the management interface accessible from WAN in some versions. Check the firewall input chain before going live. mikrotik forum is full of people who got their device owned within hours because they trusted the defaults

Went with the hEX S over the regular hEX for the PoE output on port 5. Powers my AP directly, no extra power brick on the shelf. Fifteen dollars more and completely worth it

lifecycle of every mikrotik config:
step 1 copy working script from forum
step 2 it almost work
step 3 spend four hours making it perfect
step 4 accidentally break something unrelated
step 5 restore from the backup you made in step zero that you definitely did not skip

Mikrotik's not that bad. Yeah, it's different, but that's half the fun. s_area, if you like tinkering, you'll love it.
