Is a vpn needed for apollo tv?

I just got Apollo TV and was wondering if I need a VPN? I use it on my fire stick and on my phone and just saw a comment saying they use a VPN with the mobile app. Any suggestions help :)

I use Nordvpn with Apollo TV and it works like a charm. Can't speak for ProtonVPN though.

In my experience, it's always better to be safe than sorry. I use a VPN with all my streaming apps, Apollo TV included. It's not just about hiding your activity, but also about accessing geo-restricted content.

True, but doesn't a VPN slow down your connection? I'm already battling with my potato internet, don't wanna make it worse!

It really depends on your location and ISP. In some countries, ISPs are known to throttle streaming services. A VPN can actually improve your speed in those cases. Plus, you get the added bonus of feeling like a secret agent. Win-win!

I've been using Apollo TV without a VPN for months and haven't had any issues. Maybe I'm just living on the edge?

Living on the edge? More like streaming on the edge! But seriously, while you might be fine now, a VPN is like an umbrella - better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Legally speaking, Apollo TV operates in a grey area. A VPN adds a layer of privacy that could be beneficial. Just my two cents as someone who likes to keep their digital nose clean.

Has anyone tried using Apollo TV with ProtonVPN? I heard they're having issues with some apps on iOS.

while a VPN is great for privacy, it's not a magic invisibility cloak. Still be mindful of what you're streaming!

I'm more concerned about the "Startup Show not working" issue. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yep, having the same problem. Maybe we should start a separate thread for troubleshooting?

For tech-savvy folks, here's an interesting read on ResearchGate about VPN technology and security

Thanks for sharing! Always good to see some actual research rather than just anecdotal evidence. Though I must admit, half of it went over my head. I guess I'll stick to my "click button, watch show" approach for now! :D

Friendly reminder that vpn ≠ anonymity. Your digital footprint still exists, just wearing different shoes

Late response to SteelHeart but yeah ProtonVPN on iOS had IKEv2 reconnect issues for a while around mid-2024, kept dropping on cellular switches. Switched to WireGuard protocol in the app settings and it's been solid since. If you're still on it, try that before bailing on the service entirely

Before assuming you need a VPN, worth checking if your ISP is actually throttling anything. Run a speed test normally, then run the same test through a VPN. If the VPN result is significantly faster on streaming, your ISP is throttling by traffic type. Broadbandnow walks through exactly how to read the results. A lot of people buying VPNs to "fix buffering" when their connection just isn't fast enough to begin with
