Israel used the costly Arrow missile defence system to intercept a ballistic missile over the Red Sea

Israel has repeatedly used Iron Dome short-range surface-to-air missiles in its new war against Hamas. The MIM-104 Patriot was also in operation. Now it is the turn of the Arrow.

Here's What We Know

During the new military clash, the Arrow missile defence system was used for the first time. This is reported by the press service of the Israeli Air Force. The complex intercepted a surface-to-surface missile.

The projectile was launched from the Red Sea area. The type of missile is not officially specified, but Reuters writes about a ballistic target. The Israeli Air Force successfully used the Arrow missile defence system and intercepted the aerial threat, preventing it from entering the country's airspace.

Arrow is an expensive missile defence system. For example, a version of the Arrow-3 was sold to Germany for more than $4bn. The system was developed by Israel in conjunction with the US. The cost of the missile is approximately $3 million.

The interceptor in flight can reach speeds of more than Mach 5 (6174 km/h). The Arrow-3 can destroy different types of threats, including ballistic missiles, within a radius of 2,500 kilometres. The intercept altitude exceeds 100 kilometres.
