NASA showed how it will deliver soil samples from Mars to Earth using the Mars Ascent Vehicle

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has shown how it plans to take soil samples from Mars and bring them back to Earth for study.

Here's What We Know

The Mars rover Perseverance has been collecting soil samples from Mars for months. During this time, it was able to find and pack 14 rock samples. In addition, scientists intend to get a sample of the atmosphere of the Red Planet.

Test tubes with the materials will be sent to Earth as part of the Mars Sample Return Mission (MSR). It will be organized by NASA together with the European Space Agency (ESA).

A Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) rocket will travel to the Red Planet for the samples. The Perseverance drone will load the samples into the rocket, which will take them to a near-Marsian orbit. The Earth Return Orbiter (ERO) spacecraft will then send a set of samples back to Earth. Separately, MAV will deliver two more rovers to Mars to help Perseverance load the samples into the rocket.
