During the shelling of Ukraine, a Russian fighter jet lost a secret missile
A Russian fighter jet in an attempt to shell the territory of Ukraine lost a high-precision upgraded R-77-1 missile.
What is known
Ukrainian rescuers found fragments of a rocket in the Zhytomyr region. It was lost during the fighting in the north of Ukraine. The reason was a technical problem.
The R-77-1 is one of the most advanced missiles of Russian Federation's army. It has active radar guidance. The Russian army began using these air-to-air missiles in 2015.
About two years ago, the Russian Space Forces signed a record contract worth 65 billion rubles ($1.2 billion / UAH 35.5 billion at the current exchange rate) for the supply of upgraded versions of the R-77-1 for installation on Su-35 and Su-57 aircrafts. The missile has an updated homing head, more modes of operation and redesigned software.
The mass of R-77-1 is 190 kg. The maximum firing range compared to the conventional R-77 has been increased from 80 km to 110 km. Also the new version of the rocket has different rear section of the tail, which was changed to reduce aerodynamic drag.
