MARS II multiple rocket launchers will be able to launch JFS-M cruise missiles with a range of 500 km
Three companies will develop cruise missiles for the MARS II multiple rocket launcher system.
What we know
The agreement was signed by MBDA Deutschland GmBH, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and ESG Elektroniksystem-und Logistik-GmbH. The aim of the cooperation is to develop a guided missile - Joint Fire Support Missile (JFS-M) for MARS II and probably for other systems. Let us remind that MARS II is the European equivalent of the U.S. M270 MLRS.
The JFS-M will be developed by MBDA Deutschland GmBH, which already has experience in building cruise missiles. According to preliminary information, the range of JFS-M will be about 500 km.
Now the companies have to solve the problem of compatibility of the new cruise missile with the standard transport and launch complex MARS II. It accommodates six launch tubes. Presumably, the number will be reduced to two.
JFS-M will be able to maneuver and evade enemy air defenses. According to the idea of specialists from MDBA Deutschland GmBH, the cruise missile should be able to detect targets before it is detected itself.
