The Russian army lost two dozen advanced Su-35 fighters during the war in Ukraine.

What we know

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have destroyed two squadrons of Russian fighters since the start of the full-scale invasion. Oleksiy Gromov, deputy chief of the Main Operative Directorate of the General Staff of the AFU, said this. According to him, since February 24, 2022, the Ukrainian military has eliminated "about 24 units" of Su-35s.

Gromov also noted that over the last week, Ukrainian Air Defense assets destroyed 27 enemy air targets. Due to the heavy losses, Russia is bringing back into service old Su-24M bombers, which were finally withdrawn from combat service in 2018.

Note that the cost of one Su-35 fighter jet ranges from $40 million to $65 million if we are talking about planes for the Russian army. Thus, two dozens of destroyed aircraft are converted into $1-1.5 billion. By the way, a few years ago Russia sold 24 Su-35 fighters to China at the price of about $100 million apiece. By comparison, one 5th-generation American F-35 was a few million cheaper at the time. Now the price is around $80 million.
