Japan will accelerate deployment of upgraded Type 12 missiles with a launch range of 1,200 km
The Japanese Defense Ministry intends to speed up the deployment of an upgraded version of the Type 12 anti-ship missile.
What we know
The missile is still under development, but it is already known what it will look like. Below you can see an image of the Type 12, published by the Japanese Ministry of Defense in mid-summer 2022. It looks similar to the American AGM-158 JASSM air-to-air missile developed by Lockheed Martin. Its cost is about $0.85 billion.
The Type 12 is a surface-to-ship missile. The first version had a launch range of 200 km. The upgraded version of the missile will be able to hit targets up to 900 km, but in the future Japan will increase the range to 1200 km.
The upgrade will bring Type 12 support for Up to Date Command. It will make it possible to receive information about the enemy object due to the satellite communication right during the flight. Thus, the missile will be able to destroy targets that are on the move.
