China shot down an aircraft with an upgraded HQ-17A air defense missile, which is based on the Russian Tor air defense system
Amid preparations for the US-India joint exercises in the Himalayas, China has decided to test a new HQ-17A SAM missile in combat.
What we know
The command tested the upgraded HQ-17A surface-to-air missile at an altitude of about 4,500 meters. The test successfully destroyed a target aircraft flying at low altitudes. The military successfully accomplished the mission and shot down the object despite significant electromagnetic obstacles.
The HQ-17A is a Chinese SAM developed on the basis of the Russian Tor-1 system. It was first shown in the fall of 2019 during a parade in Beijing, although it entered service in 2015. The range of target engagement is up to 15 km (up to 10 km in altitude).
