Construction of amphibious assault ship USS Pittsburg (LPD 31) with RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile system started in the USA
U.S. shipbuilding company Ingalls Shipbuilding has begun construction of its fifth ship named for Pittsburgh, the USS Pittsburgh (LPD 31).

USS Pittsburgh (LPD 31) will be the 15th ship of the San Antonio class. It will be designed to transport troops, aircraft, helicopters and cargo. The ship will be 208 m long, 32 m wide and have a displacement of 25,300 tons at full load.
The USS Pittsburgh (LPD 31) will be powered by four 41,600 hp Colt-Pielstick Diesel engines. They will enable the ship to reach a speed of over 22 knots (40,7 km/h). It will be able to carry two Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion or Boeing MV-22 Osprey helicopters, as well as four Bell AH-1Z Viper, Bell UH-1Y Venom or Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk.
The new San Antonio-class ship will be equipped with 30 mm cannons and M2 machine guns. The USS Pittsburgh (LPD 31) basic armament will include two shipboard RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile systems worth more than $400,000. The SAMs can engage targets up to 10 km in range and up to 4 km in altitude.
