Rumour: Microsoft has closed the department that releases physical copies of games

We wrote that Microsoft has announced a large-scale wave of layoffs: 1900 employees of Xbox, Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and Bethesda will lose their jobs. However, it has also become known that the department that sells physical copies of games is likely to be affected by the cuts.

Here's What We Know

Journalist Jez Corden wrote that several sources reported the closure of departments dedicated to the release of Xbox games in physical retail.

Jez also noted that such actions do not yet confirm that Microsoft is stopping releasing all Xbox games on discs right now. They may outsource it altogether.

However, the information that Hellblade 2 will have a digital-only version and rumours of the next Xbox Series X without a disc drive make it clear in which direction the company is heading.
