Best Presentation Clickers (November 2024)

By: Jim Reddy | Updated yesterday, 14:56

Whether you're giving a presentation in a boardroom, classroom, or conference room, a reliable presentation remote can be a lifesaver. With so many models on the market, it can be difficult to choose the right one. That's why I've done the research for you to find the best wireless presentation remote.

I've reviewed the top models in 2024, and I've also provided a buyer's guide to help you make an informed decision, a detailed review of each product, and answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

What are the Best Presenter Remotes?

best presentation clicker 2024

What is the real difference between various models of presenters? Is it worth it to buy a more expensive presenter model or is it enough to buy a budget PowerPoint clicker? Do I need a red or green laser pointer? Is the presentation timer convenient? What is better - buttons or joysticks? Is the clicker compact enough to fit into a palm or a pocket?

If you've ever asked yourself such a questions, this review will give you detailed explanations.

Short on time? Here are my top two pick for presentation remote clicker.

Best Presentation Clicker - Buyer's Guide

Drawing from my experience before making a purchase, it's important to consider a few key features that can make a difference in your presentation. Here's what to look for when choosing a presentation remote:

Power

Presenter controls work with either replaceable batteries or a built-in rechargeable battery. I can not say which is better, because in both cases there are pros and cons. If you have opted for the battery version, then I recommend using either high-quality batteries, or replaceable rechargeable batteries of sufficient capacity.

Also, if you use the remote control with one battery long enough, keep a spare one handy just in case. The problem of changing batteries can be solved by purchasing a presenter with a built-in battery. These units are often charged via a standard micro USB input when connected to a laptop, PC, PowerBank or 220V AC adapter.

Range

Another important factor when choosing a remote for presentations is the operating distance of the presenter itself from the mini USB receiver during the presentation. Also, it is necessary to consider visible obstacles in the signal path (walls, grills, doors, etc.)

There are models with the working distance to the receiver should not exceed 10-15 meters (32-49ft.), but there are models with a much greater operating distance, which reaches up to 100 meters ( 328ft.)! Therefore, when selecting a presenter it is necessary to pay special attention to this important technical characteristic and to be guided by the size of audience which you will have to work with. For example, Kensington Wireless Presenter with 65 Ft/ 20 Meters or range or Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote with 90-100 Ft/30 Meters.

Compatibility

Next important point when choosing a presenter is its ability to connect to different operating systems (OS). So, for example, cheaper and less functional models of clickers can only work on operating systems such as Windows and Linux, but will not work on Mac OS. Accordingly, there are more versatile models of presenters that work on Windows, Android, Linux and, of course, MacOS. Note that most of the modern low-cost remotes, and those that are more expensive, do not need to install drivers, and work on the Plug and Play basis.

best presentation remote 2024

Features

Depending on the functionality, different presenters are equipped with different sets of buttons, joysticks and switches. There are models that are equipped with LCD displays that can display the time, battery level, countdown timer, the quality level of radio signal reception, etc.

With the above-mentioned buttons and switches you can control your presentation - switch slides forward and backward, navigate through the presentation menu and system guide, adjust the system volume, make graphic notes directly on the slide with a simple hand movement, and so on. Accordingly, you should understand that the cost of a particular presenter will depend on the kind of the above-listed features the device will have.

An undeniable advantage of modern remote controls for presentations is a built-in laser pointer. This option allows you to make your presentation even more interactive and understandable for the audience. With a laser pointer you can focus the audience's attention on specific details from a considerable distance (up to 300 feet / 100 meters) from the portable presentation screen.

Often manufacturers use a red laser for this purpose because it is most visible to the human eye and attracts more attention. However, the green laser is gaining in popularity.

Laser Pointers

Many wireless presenters come with built-in laser pointers. If you plan on using your remote to point out details in your presentation, make sure the laser pointer is bright and easy to see.

Battery Life

Make sure the battery life is sufficient for your presentation needs. Most remotes run on AAA batteries, but some models have rechargeable batteries that can be charged via USB.

Logitech R500s Laser Presentation Remote Clicker Review

Editor’s Choice

The Logitech R500 is a simple, ergonomic and reliable device that allows the speaker to effectively communicate his or her ideas to the audience. With the R500's laconic design (just three buttons that can't be pressed by mistake), it's easy to move from slide to slide with just your tactile sense. Emphasize especially important information with the bright red beam of the pointer.

Use the Logitech Presentation app to assign functions to buttons, track battery life, and set the on-screen timer.

Connect the R500 to your computer via USB or Bluetooth® LE technology. The device's wide range of 65 feet (20 meters) allows you to move freely around the room during your presentation.

The R500 remote control with laser pointer was designed with anatomical features of the hand in mind, making it very comfortable to hold in the hand. The soft rubberised coating and textured buttons ensure that the remote control won't slip out of your hand during a presentation. It works best if you’re using a projection screen. The red light of the laser isn’t that visible if you’re using a computer or TV screen during your presentation.

Battery and connection status is LED indicated. Battery life: 12 months and an additional week if not using the laser pointer. Wavelength of the pointer: 640-660 nm (red). A free USB port is required for operation.

Pros:

  • Ergonomic design
  • Easy to operate
  • Versatile compatibility so you can easily work with iOS, Android, Windows and Mac, and almost any presentation software program like PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, PDF, and Prezi

Cons:

  • You can’t recharge this device, so you should keep an extra set of AAA batteries available

Summary: My findings show that the Logitech R500 is simple, ergonomic, and reliable. The R500's sleek design (only three buttons that cannot be pressed by mistake) Battery and connection status is indicated by an LED indicator. Wavelength of the pointer: 640-660 nm (red). The R500 connects to your computer via USB or Bluetooth technology and has a long range of 65 feet (20 meters).

Kensington K33374EUB Wireless Presenter Review

Best Overall

The small presenter from Kensington is designed to be lightweight and easy to use. Its strong curves are perfectly adapted to the contours of your hand, which means you won't feel uncomfortable during prolonged use. Apart from the four buttons located on the front side, this remote doesn't have many additional presentation features. However, the only thing I like is the USB port located at the bottom. It can be used as a charging port for the remote, as well as a convenient place to store the USB receiver when not in use.

The Kensington Wireless Presenter has a high-speed communication method that provides continuous range without interruptions. It operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz and requires connection to a personal computer via a USB dongle. The transceiver is compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 10 operating systems. It is compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint out of the box, but drivers allow you to connect keyboard buttons. With a few clicks, you can configure it to control any presentation software you like.

There is a new version of Kensington presenter with USB nano receiver, which is much smaller in comparison with the standard version. In my opinion the old version is still more reliable, unless the USB nano receiver is more appealing to you.

Pros:

  • It has forward and back control of PowerPoint and Keynote with no drivers needed
  • Plug-and-Play easy setup
  • Internal storage for wireless USB receiver so it won’t get lost

Cons:

  • The transmitter and receiver are hardware linked, so if you lose one, you need to throw the other away and replace them in pair

Summary: As indicated by my tests the Kensington K33374EUB Wireless Presenter is a high quality, reliable device that is ideal for presentations. It has an ergonomic design that fits comfortably in your hand. It operates at 2.4 GHz and requires a USB cable to connect to a computer. Compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 10, it allows you to easily control PowerPoint presentations as well as other programs.

Logitech 910-005749 Spotlight Presentation Remote Review

Premium Choice

The Spotlight 910-005749 is a special remote control for presentations. You can customize your needs and actions using software on your computer. Functions like adjusting the volume, zooming in on objects on a slide, or even pressing the "Play" button on a video using the remote control are all highlights of the device.

To use Spotlight on a Windows or Mac computer, you need to install the software. You have two options for connecting the remote to your computer. The easiest way is to take the USB receiver from the bottom of the remote and plug it into an available USB port on your computer. As USB-C becomes more common, you may need to connect Spotlight to your computer using a standard Bluetooth connection.

With the Logitech app, you can turn features on and off, adjust the size of the highlighted area or use a virtual magnifying glass, and turn on a reminder vibration five minutes before the end of your presentation.

Logitech Spotlight works with Keynote, PowerPoint, Google Slides, PDF, Prezi. Once you've started a presentation in any of the above applications, use Spotlight to navigate through your slides. But before you dive into presentations with Spotlight, you should practice using the presentation clicker, setting up the function buttons and getting used to working remotely.

Pros:

  • It works seamlessly with all major presentation software
  • It comes with a built in battery which is easily rechargeable
  • You can highlight or magnify specific content directly from the presenter remote

Cons:

  • Some may consider obligatory installing the Logitech app as cons. In my opinion this make the presenter more precise in operation

Summary: Based on my observations Logitech Spotlight is a powerful tool for any presenter. With its intuitive user interface and features, it's a great choice for anyone looking to take their presentations to the next level. Two options for connecting the remote to a computer: USB or Bluetooth. Logitech Spotlight works with Keynote, PowerPoint, Google Slides, PDF, Prezi.

Kensington K72426AM Wireless Presenter with Green Laser Review

Best with Joystick Cursor Control

The Kensington K72426AM wireless presentation remote has an ergonomic design that makes it comfortable to hold in your hand. The body is partially covered with a soft-touch coating, which means that the device will not slip out of your hands. All buttons are backlit, so you can easily operate the remote control in a dark room.

There is also a storage space on the back of the case (for a USB receiver). So you will never lose or forget it. Unlike many similar gadgets, the Kensington presentation remote has an internal microSD card slot inside the USB receiver. This allows you to transfer all your files to it. It can also function as a flash drive.

The device is easy to operate. Two modes are available: Presentation mode and mouse mode. If the multimedia part of your presentation is complete, simply press the black button on the screen and turn your attention to the audience.

Kensington presentation remotes work within a 150-foot (45-meter) radius. The remote is compatible with the two most common operating systems: Windows and Mac OS X. Kensington presentation remotes run on two AAA batteries, which are available separately.

Pros:

  • Nice to touch and non-slip-off-the-hands thanks to the soft-touch coating
  • Backilit controls

Cons:

Summary: The Kensington K72426AM is the ideal device for presenting content and navigating a room or venue. Its ergonomic design and backlit buttons make it easy to use in all lighting conditions. Logitech R800 Presentation Clicker Remote Review

Best Presenter Timer

The Logitech R800 is a high-quality, functional device. You can fully learn how to work with it in a couple of minutes. The perfect-looking non-slip plastic case and ergonomic shape make the presenter a pleasure to hold.

The designers have implemented an important feature for many speakers - a timer. 5 and 2 minutes before the end of the time, the device vibrates softly in your hand.

The next cool feature of the device is the green color of the laser pointer instead of red, which adds more positive to the presentation. The wireless receiver, which needs to be plugged into the PC, is surprisingly large, the size of a standard USB flash drive. When carrying it, it fits comfortably into the speaker's case - the case has a hole for it, making it difficult to leave it in the computer.

The device works simply only with Windows. Working on MAC OS X requires some effort. The "Forward" and "Back" buttons on the presenter repeat the functionality of the PageUP and PageDown keys on the keyboard. This means that the presenter can switch not only slides in PowerPoint, but also any other content in any other Windows program. Logitech works up to 100 feet (30 meters) away from the recipient.

Pros:

  • The green laser pointer is powerful enough even for LCD displays
  • A built-in LCD display with smart timer integrated to let you manage your time with silent, vibrating alerts
  • With a range of up to 100 feet (30 meters), you can enjoy the freedom to move around big venues

Cons:

  • The battery is discharged significantly when you are using the laser pointer
  • Working on MAC OS X will require some efforts

Summary: The Logitech R800 is a high quality, functional device with a non-slip plastic body and ergonomic shape. It works up to 100 feet (30 meters) away from the recipient. It has a timer function and a green laser pointer color. Works with Windows only. It can switch not only slides in PowerPoint, but also any content in any other Windows program.

How Does the Presenter Remote Work? - the Basics in Brief

best presenter remotes review 2024

A presentation pointer is a remote control for a PC or projector combined with a laser pointer. It is often referred to as a presenter clicker or powerpoint clicker. Communication between the clicker and the laptop is via radio channel or Bluetooth. For this purpose, a compact (smaller than a flash drive) receiver is attached to the clicker, connected to the PC via a USB slot.

To initiate the presenter, it is enough to press the button on its body. The computer detects the clicker as a USB-keyboard. There is no problem with installing drivers and additional applications, they are not needed. The body of the clicker has, besides the general switch, buttons for turning the laser pointer on and off, for changing slides in any order, and for replacing them with coloured fields.

All best presenters, or as they are also referred to: best presenter clickers, best powerpoint clickers or best presentation pointers, are designed to optimise and simplify the process of giving presentations.

How is the Presenter Connected?

Let's move on. The presenter is connected to a laptop or PC wirelessly, through a radio channel via a wireless mini USB receiver, which is supplied with the device. Often the USB-receiver is hidden in the case of the presenter, so that it is convenient to store it and not to lose it during transportation. The receiver is connected to a standard USB input on a laptop or PC, and not to the projector as some people mistakenly think. The projector in this case only projects images (slides, video) on a special screen or wall, and the presentation itself runs from the PC on which it is set.

Silent or Clicking Presenter?

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that some presenters, while pressing the buttons, make relatively loud clicking sounds like a PC mouse. Accordingly, these clicks can be heard by the people who are close to you, which is not always pleasant and appropriate. Therefore, I recommend you to take into consideration this seemingly insignificant nuance when choosing a remote control for presentations.

FAQ about Best Presenter Remotes

Here are some answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about presentation clickers:

best presentation remote

What is a Presentation Remote?

The presentation remote is designed to control multimedia computer resources during meetings, presentations, speeches for the audience. The presenter consists of a transmitter and a USB receiver connected to a computer or laptop and provides wireless control of the presentation. Bluetooth is also used as an alternative connection means.

What should I look for in a presentation remote?

When choosing a presentation remote, consider factors like wireless range, compatibility, laser pointer brightness, battery life, ease of use, and additional features like timers or vibration alerts.

How long can the presenter work on a single battery charge or on one battery?

There is no definite answer to this question. Duration of operation on one charge depends directly on the following factors: the battery capacity of the battery or the built-in battery, how often and for how long the presenter is in use, how far it is from the USB-receiver and what kind of obstacles are in the way of signal, how often you use the laser pointer function, etc.

Do presentation remotes work with Macs?

Most presentation remotes work with both Windows and Macs, but it's important to check the compatibility before making a purchase.

Can I use a presentation remote with my smartphone or tablet?

Some presentation remotes are compatible with smartphones and tablets, but it's important to check the compatibility before making a purchase.

Do Presentation Remotes Work with Google Slides?

Most of presentation remotes are compatible with Google Slides, but not all. Double check the list of presentation programs a selected presenter works with.

Will my Presentation Clicker Work on TV?

Traditional laser pointers aren't compatible with LCD or LED TV monitors. They can cause severe harm to the screen because they ruin the pixels on the TV screen. The damage can be permanent and you'll be paying for a new TV screen. So using your standard laser pointer isn't the most effective option.

A majority of today's TV monitors are made to block out different hues and glares off of the screen. Polarising filters provide greater contrast of colours. The screen's barrier may be too high traditional lasers to penetrate. This means that the laser pointer won't be visible in the display.

Pointers that operate at 5 mW or more, can cause damage to the pixels on the screen. But digital laser pointers perform better than conventional laser points. Digital presenter remotes, such as Spotlight are able to work flawlessly on TV screens.

Best Presentation Remotes: Conclusion

Whether you are a student, teacher, or business professional, a reliable presentation remote can be crucial to your presentation.

I've tried to tell you as much as I can about this essential device as a presentation remote. And I have reviewed the best presentation remotes on the market, such as the Logitech R500s Laser Presentation Remote Clicker, Kensington Wireless Presenter or Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote.

I hope this guide has helped you find the perfect presentation remote to meet your needs!
