DeLorean Alpha5 revealed as electric coupe with iconic gullwing doors

Legendary DeLorean is officially back, best known for the iconic DMC-12 from the Back to the Future film series, has unveiled the first electric car, the DeLorean Alpha 5. The new car received iconic gullwing doors styled by Italdesign. But the rest is completely new. It's a stylish modern coupe.

It has massive wheels, slim headlights and taillights. The charging port is located on the front fender on the driver's side. The Alpha5 has ttwo-tone finish and a swoopy roofline. Inside there are two rows of seats. Access to the rear seats should be easy given the width of the doors and the lack of a B-pillar. The cabin has lost most (if not all) of the traditional controls that are built into the touch screen located on the "floating" center console. The driver has a fully digital instrument panel and a branded steering wheel.

DeLorean won't reveal all the details about the car, but confirms that the Alpha5 takes 3.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) and has an electronically limited top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h). It has a battery capacity of more than 100 kWh, good for an EPA-estimated range in excess of 300 miles (483 kilometers). These are the characteristics of the basic version, so there will be more powerful. The electric coupe has a low drag coefficient of just 0.23, which is not the best result, since the Mercedes EQS has a 0.20. Dimensions are 4995 x 2044 x 1370 mm.

Production will start in 2024 in Italy, with the transmission coming from the UK. A total of 88 cars will be produced, followed by a sports coupe with a V8 engine. If all goes according to plan, the expanded lineup is sure to include an electric sedan and even a hydrogen-powered SUV.
