Ukraine's Armed Forces may receive the most advanced version of the $4m PAC-3 MSE anti-missile system, which intercepts ballistic missiles at altitudes of up to 60km

The newest Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missile interceptors for the MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile system may appear in service with the Ukrainian Air Force. This assumption is due to the features of the new military assistance package that will be formally announced shortly.

Here's What We Know

We wrote today that the US is preparing a $2bn long-term aid package for Ukraine, which will include launchers for Hawk surface-to-air missile systems along with ammunition, as well as two types of missile interceptors for the MIM-104 Patriot air defence system.

Judging by the contents, the US intends to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities to fight more effectively against Russian ballistic missiles. Thus, the package includes PAC-3 and Guidance Enhanced Missile (GEM-T) anti-missiles.

Since this is a USAI program, it means that the munitions will not be transferred from the Pentagon's stockpile. They have to be manufactured first. Therefore, there is a high probability that it is the PAC-3 MSE that Ukraine will receive. This is the most advanced version of the interceptor.

It contains a "lethality enhancer" with dozens of titanium fragments. We have a separate material about this technology. Also MSE can intercept targets at altitudes up to 60 km. The cost of one PAC-3 MSE missile is about $4 million.

As for GEM-T, it is an interceptor, which is designed to destroy tactical ballistic missiles and is an upgrade of PAC-2. There is also a GEM-C version to eliminate cruise missiles. Both modifications have a new nose section, while GEM-T additionally received a new fuse.
