FDA approves the first over-the-counter glucometer that pairs with a smartphone

While Apple is only dreaming of an Apple Watch with non-invasive blood sugar measurement, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved US sales of Dexcom Stelo, the first over-the-counter glucometer that pairs with a smartphone and mobile app.

Here's How It Works

It is a device that measures blood glucose levels and sends the resulting data via Bluetooth to the paired smartphone.

Measurements are taken automatically every 15 minutes. The sensor requires periodic replacement - after 15 days it must be replaced with a new one.

Dexcom Stelo is designed for people aged 18 years and older who do not use insulin. This could include diabetics who take oral medications, people with prediabetes, or even non-diabetic users who want to better understand how diet and exercise can affect blood sugar levels.

Dexcom says the device will go on sale in the U.S. this summer.
