MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will get Vivo as its first customer

According to the latest rumours, Vivo has already signed a contract with MediaTek for its new Dimensity 9400 chipset, which is said to be 20% faster than its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300. It would launch in October 2023 and bring in around a billion dollars in revenue for the company. MediaTek hopes to continue this success with the Dimensity 9400, which is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2024.

Here's What We Know

Vivo seems to have already sprung into action, becoming the first customer for the new SoC. The source does not specify how many units of the chipset the Chinese handset maker has secured for its initial launch. However, depending on the initial volume, MediaTek could offer Vivo a decent discount.

The report claims that the Dimensity 9400 is 20 per cent faster than the Dimensity 9300, but that's a rather ambiguous claim as the details don't specify whether this performance difference applies to single-core, multi-core, graphics, AI or any other department.

Also, not all is rosy with the chip itself, as the Cortex-X5 core that is part of the Dimensity 9400 is said to have encountered overheating and underperformance issues. Since MediaTek's new flagship chipset is expected to come without power efficiency cores like the Dimensity 9300, this could be a real problem in maintaining acceptable temperatures. Thus, Vivo will have to implement some software and hardware optimisations to preserve battery life and prevent the phone from overheating. Further details on features and optimisations will be revealed as MediaTek continues to refine its Dimensity 9400, working with other partners.
