SAG-AFTRA union members have ratified new three-year contracts for voice actors working in television animation. More than 95 per cent of those who voted approved the agreements, which introduce protections against the misuse of artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

Under the new contracts, which run until 30 June 2026, the term "voice actor" refers exclusively to humans. Producers are required to obtain the actor's consent before using their name as a cue to create a synthesised AI voice.

Studios must also notify the union and negotiate a contract every time they use AI-generated voices instead of live actors. In addition, the contracts spell out performers' rights regarding the use of their digital copies.

"This is the first SAG-AFTRA animation voiceover contract with protections against the misuse of artificial intelligence" stated the co-chairs of the negotiating committee.

In addition to the AI provisions, the agreements include wage increases, retroactive payments, and new terms on foreign earnings, high-budget productions, late payments and other issues.

Earlier this year, the union struck a deal with Replica Studios allowing actors to "securely" licence their digital voice copies for video games. AI protection was also a key component of SAG-AFTRA's contract with Hollywood studios, signed at the end of 2023.
