The U.S. Supreme Court has delivered a verdict in a case to overturn a congressional decision to ban TikTok from operating in the state.

Here's What We Know

After the victory in the presidential elections of Donald Trump, there were reasonable assumptions that the Supreme Court would side with the Chinese company ByteDance and cancel the ban of TikTok. But that didn't happen.

Today, the justices found that Congressional intent does not contravene the US Constitution or go beyond the law.

There is no doubt that for over 170 million Americans, TikTok is a unique and broad means of expression, a way to interact, and a source of community... However, Congress decided that selling the company was necessary to address valid national security concerns about TikTok's data collection practices and its relationship with a foreign adversary (China).

The earlier decision requires TikTok to be blocked in the US as of 19 January 2025. The Biden administration can postpone the implementation of the decision, so that further this issue will be handled by Donald Trump.

Recall, TikTok will not be threatened with blocking if ByteDance sells the social network to one of the US residents, there are rumours that it could be Elon Musk - a man extremely close to Trump. And considering that TikTok will be the main sponsor of the party in honour of the inauguration of the new US president, the fate of the popular social network becomes quite obvious.
