Apple has responded to a class action lawsuit alleging that some Apple Watch bands contain toxic substances known as PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances). The company stated that all Apple Watch bands are safe to wear.

Here's What We Know

The official Apple statement reads:

"We are confident that our Apple Watch bands are safe for users. In addition to conducting our own testing, we work with independent laboratories to thoroughly analyse the materials used in our products."

Despite the company's safety assurances, Apple has reiterated its intention to completely eliminate PFAS from all of its products and manufacturing processes. Back in November 2022, the company announced plans to phase out these chemicals. However, this process will take time as alternatives that meet performance standards are needed.

Thestudy that led to the lawsuit found elevated levels of PFAS in some smartwatches, particularly in the bands, which can lead to health problems through skin contact. The tests involved not only Apple but also other brands, including Nike, Fitbit and Google. However, the study does not point to specific models of bands with PFAS.

So far, Apple has not said which Apple Watch bands may contain these chemicals. The lawsuit covers customers of three types of Apple Watch bands: Sport Band, Nike Sport Band and Ocean Band.
