Sonic the Hedgehog 3 overtakes Detective Pikachu to become the second highest-grossing film based on video games

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was a huge success, grossing $462.5 million at the global box office, allowing it to beat Detective Pikachu ($450 million) to become the second highest-grossing video game film.

Here's What We Know

The third Sonic movie premiered on 20 December 2024. The film grossed $60.1 million in its first weekend, setting a record for the franchise. The film's total gross in the US and Canada was $230.5 million, and $232 million internationally.

However, the film is behind the Super Mario Bros. at the cinema, which grossed $1.36 billion, remaining the highest-grossing film based on video games.
