In Norway, 96 per cent of new cars in January were electric, with Toyota topping the sales rankings

Norway has once again proved that the future of the car market is electric. In January, 96% of all new cars sold were electric. And if you add hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the electrification rate reaches 98.6%.

Here's What We Know

According to Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV), the Norwegian Road Traffic Board, 9,343 new cars were registered in January 2025, an increase of 82% compared to January 2024. Of these:

  • 8,954 units. - electric vehicles
  • 219 units. - hybrids and plug-in hybrids
  • 170 units. - petrol and diesel

This is further confirmation that the market for cars with internal combustion engines in Norway has effectively disappeared. In comparison, back in January 2024, the share of electric cars was 92 per cent.

Top 10 best-selling car models in January 2025:

  1. Toyota bZ4X - 1,188 units.
  2. Volkswagen ID.4 - 830 units.
  3. Nissan Ariya - 544 units.
  4. Volkswagen ID.3 - 537 units.
  5. Volkswagen ID.7 - 490 units.
  6. Tesla Model Y - 361 units.
  7. Tesla Model 3 - 324 units.
  8. Skoda Enyaq - 271 units.
  9. BMW i4 - 243 units.
  10. Ford Explorer EV - 221 units.

Tesla sales fell 38 per cent to 689 units despite overall market growth. Tesla's market share has fallen to around 7% from over 21% in 2024.
