Volkswagen has announced the expansion of the powertrain range for the Tiguan and Passat models, as well as the new Tayron, with powerful TSI turbo petrol engines. These engines are paired by default with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Here's What We Know

The Tiguan and Tayron crossovers are available with the 2.0 TSI 4MOTION engine with 150 kW (204 hp) or 195 kW (265 hp). The Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION is available exclusively in the 195 kW (265 hp) version. Sales of the new all-wheel-drive Volkswagen models have already started in selected markets in Europe.

The all-wheel drive of all three models uses a 4MOTION clutch to transfer power to the rear axle. In normal driving conditions - for example, in the city on dry roads without maximum load - the drive is carried out only on the front axle to save fuel. The rear axle is only engaged when the load increases or when the wheels lose traction. All-wheel drive can be activated manually if required.

All-wheel-drive models with the optional tow hitch offer an additional technical feature: as soon as the 4MOTION system detects a trailer, the optional Trailer driving mode is automatically activated. The Tiguan and Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION are designed for trailers weighing up to 2,200 kg, the Tayron 2.0 TSI 4MOTION, depending on equipment, allows trailers weighing up to 2,500 kg to be towed.

The petrol Tiguan and Tayron develop 150 kW (204 hp) in the first power level. In combination with a seven-speed gearbox (DSG), the powertrain sends its maximum torque of 320 N⋅m to all-wheel drive from as early as 1,400 rpm. WLTP consumption figures range from 7.5 to 8.3 litres/100 km, depending on the model range and equipment. Top speed is limited at 220 km/h, and acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 7.5 seconds. The Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4MOTION is available from €48,175, the larger Tayron from €50,770.

The most powerful TSI engine in the Tiguan, Tayron and Passat ranges is the 195-kilowatt (265 hp) engine. A corresponding engine with identical power is also fitted to the Golf GTI. However, Volkswagen engineers have specifically adapted the engine for use in the larger Tiguan, Tayron and Passat models, increasing the maximum torque to 400 N⋅m from 1,650 rpm instead of 370 N⋅m in the Golf GTI. These Tiguan, Tayron and Passat are available exclusively in the R-Line trim.
