Ford has applied for registration of the trade mark "Mach 4" in several countries at once, which may indicate the company's intentions to release a four-door version of the legendary Mustang not only in the United States, but also in global markets.

Here's What We Know

Ford Motor Company filed an application to register the name "Mach 4" with the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) on 25 February 2025. According to the documents, the trademark relates to "petrol and electric engine vehicles, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural components".

This application comes shortly after a similar action in the US, where Ford applied to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). A similar application has also been filed in Australia.

Rumours of a four-door Mustang have been circulating for decades - the idea emerged almost immediately after the debut of the first generation of the iconic maslcar. In 2018, information emerged about Ford's plans to create a four-door Mustang sedan, and a month later the company allegedly showed such a concept to dealers.

What's particularly interesting is that in May 2024, Ford CEO Jim Farley personally stated that he believed a four-door Mustang was possible "if it had all the performance and character of the original." And in August, the company showed off images of future Mustang variants, including:

  • A four-door coupe called the Mach 4
  • A Baja-style off-road version
  • Mustang EcoBoost with RTR modifications
  • A V8-powered convertible similar to the former Shelby GT350/GT500 models

According to previous reports, Ford even created a design concept for a four-door Mustang based on the S197 generation model circa 2005, although photos of this model are unavailable and it has never been shown to the public.

Given the new applications for the brand name in various countries, the likelihood of a four-door Ford Mustang looks more likely than ever before.
