Google is laying off hundreds of employees in its Android and Pixel divisions

Google has announced significant layoffs in its Android and Pixel divisions as part of the company's internal restructuring.
Here's What We Know
Hundreds of employees working on Android software, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser have lost their jobs. These layoffs followed the merger of the Android and Chrome teams that took place last year. As part of the restructuring, Google had previously offered voluntary share buybacks, which also reduced headcount. Prior to the voluntary exit programme, the group had a total headcount of more than 20,000.
A Google spokesperson said that the merging of the teams was aimed at making the company more flexible and efficient. As a result of the restructuring, Google aims to create a more integrated ecosystem where artificial intelligence will be a key focus.
However, this is not the company's first mass layoffs: in 2023, Google cut 6 per cent of its global workforce, amounting to around 200,000 people. The current cuts, although smaller in scale, highlight the challenging environment in the tech sector, where mergers and restructuring often result in job losses.
