Apple made $5.3bn in India - and gave almost all of it to developers

While India is discussing the launch of its own iOS app shop, Apple has decided to remind who's boss. According to a published study, developers from India will earn $5.31 billion in the App Store ecosystem in 2024.
Here's What We Know
In 2024, the App Store in India brought in a whopping $5.31 billion to developers - and crucially, 94% of that amount (i.e. $4.98 billion) stayed outside of Apple's commission. This is the data from a fresh study published on the company's official website.
Of the total amount, $4.65bn came from invoices and sales of physical goods and services, $352.9m came from in-app advertising, and another $302m came from digital goods and services. According to Apple, downloads in the country tripled in 5 years and revenue grew 5 times in 5 years.
Tim Cook, traditionally unsparing in complimenting its developers, said the App Store has been an "economic miracle" for the Indian IT industry. The company emphasises that App Store is not just about iOS and subscription fees, but a platform that really helps businesses grow.
Amidst more discussions about launching a local alternative app shop, figures like these are a neat way of saying, "Are you sure you need it?"
